CONSTITUTION AND ACTION OF NIASE'S MEN'S GROUP: NEW ALTERNATIVE MASCULINITIES AS PREVENTION AND OVERCOMING OF GENDER VIOLENCE

Abstract

Overcoming and preventing gender-based violence demands a clear and active positioning of men who combat the various forms of violence in our society. The literature about the role of masculinities in relation to prevention and violence identifies traditional masculinity models that sustain this violence (dominant and oppressed masculinities) and others that, by their own courageous action of confronting violence, help to overcome it. In this article we present the constitution and development of the NIASE Men's Group, focused on the strengthening and visibility of New Alternative Masculinities, as well as its performance and contributions. The text presents the theoretical and practical bases about socialization for attraction to violence, preventive socialization, traditional and alternative models of masculinity, and the evolution of research in this line. This bibliographical survey explains how the theoretical analyses on preventive socialization allow the proposition of actions in line with the national scientific literature regarding the prevention of gender violence. Next, the article discusses the actions developed by the group, such as training in schools, lectures, audiovisual productions, among others, based on scientific data and theoretical proposals and with positive results. Besides the external formation to the research group, the studies and actions developed by the group of men establish a two-way street with the other axes and subgroups of NIASE itself, contributing to the formation of its members.
